| The Setting-Tallahassee
The School of Architecture at Florida A & M University (FAMU) is located near the downtown center of Tallahassee, the capital city of Florida. A beautiful city of approximately 250,000, Tallahassee is nestled among the rolling hills of northwest Florida. Large trees draped with Spanish moss and lush vegetation enhance the entire city. Only 20 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, the city is within a two-hour drive of some of the world's finest beaches. Tallahassee has the mild, moist climate that is characteristic of the Gulf states and experiences subtropical summers--outstanding weather for year-round outdoor living.
Tallahassee is home to a variety of activities throughout the year. You may choose to watch the Rattlers play sports, attend a downtown festival, visit the Tallahassee Museum of Art and Science, read or listen to poems at a local club, visit one of the two major malls to shop, or a myriad of other recreation and leisure activities. You can also see a movie in the IMAX theatre or visit NASA's upcoming Challenger Center.
Education is Tallahassee's major "industry," and FAMU is a major partner in this enterprise. Also home to Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, and Lively Technical Center, the city offers a high-quality, college-oriented, urban environment including moderately priced student housing, numerous parks, and nearby fresh- and salt-water recreation. Students have ready access to the resources available in a state capital including construction projects, state-employed architects, specialized libraries, and museums.
