Facilities Assessment Survey for Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
Under this contract, IBS researchers developed an instrument for surveying several dozen facilities owned or leased by the Tennessee Valley Authority, measuring the degree of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The team also created in hierarchical order, required building modifications to assure compliance. The instrument was unique, in that it allowed a variety of common non-compliant situations to be classified or encoded for later review and manipulation by a spreadsheet or database program. Additionally, recommended design solutions were developed for non-compliant spaces.
In order to efficiently survey the large number of facilities involved, students and researchers trained in Tallahassee on the FAMU School of Architecture building, and then traveled to eight states where they inspected over two dozen facilities owned or leased by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Review and analysis of the data and drafting of recommendations for modifications were completed at the School of Architecture.
The final report constitutes a four volume report, which was examined as a model of ADA survey procedures by a later project conducted by the University of Florida. In that project, the FAMU Institute for Building Sciences was subcontracted to determine the degree of ADA compliance for the FAMU, FSU and UWF campuses, while the University of Florida and others surveyed the remaining nine campuses of the state university system.
