Roy F. Knight Professor Roy Knight, FAIA came to FAMU in1988 as Dean of the School of Architecture. He served in that capacity until the fall of 1996 when he began full-time teaching. For several years this included responsibility for completing development of the FAMU/USF Cooperative Master's Degree Program in Architecture in Tampa, now the School of Architecture and Community Design, University of South Florida. For six years Professor Knight served as Chair of the Florida Architectural Education Leadership Group. Before arriving at FAMU, Prof. Knight had held the position of Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1979-1988. From 1974-79 Professor Knight was responsible for architecture, planning and design programs at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., Previous to that he had been a faculty member and Assistant Dean at the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee. Professor Knight is a graduate of Harvard College and received his master's degree in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Following that, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen Denmark for a year with Architect/Professor Jorgen Bo and his atelier. Professor Knight is an architect, licensed to practice in the State of Florida. He is also certified for licensure in any state and several foreign countries by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Professor Knight serves a consultant in architecture and planning. His professional experience includes the Architectural Branch of the Tennessee Valley Authority (urban and building design) and private consulting, including service on building committees of private schools, churches, and museums. Having been an active member since 1971, Professor Knight is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Since coming to Florida, he has held many leadership positions in the AIA/Florida Association. In 1998 he was state-wide President. He has also served as representative of the architecture profession on the Florida Transportation and Land Use Study Commission and the Florida National Register of Historic Places Review Board. Professor Knight currently teaches fourth-year design and theory or history courses, including courses that prepare students for master's thesis. He also serves on senior project and thesis committees. Occasionally Mr. Knight teaches architecture history. |
