General Education Requirements
Course Work
All students enrolled in the lower-division programs of Florida A & M University must complete a sequence of courses referred to as "general education." Courses in communication, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities are included. Students should refer to the University Catalog for a specific listing of approved courses.
The Gordon Rule
The State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.30(2), commonly known as the "Gordon Rule," specifies that all state universities require in all baccalaureate degree programs, satisfactory completion of 12 semester hours of English course work in which all students are required to produce written work of at least 24,000 words and completion of six hours of mathematics course work at the level of college algebra or higher. A grade of "C" or better is required in each course in the communication, mathematics, and humanities/social sciences lists. Subsection (3) (d) of the rule authorizes alternative plans to the subsection (2) requirements. Students should refer to the University Catalog for a specific listing of approved courses.
The College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST)
In order to be admitted into the upper division of the School of Architecture, students must have passed all sections of the CLAST. This state test measures the level of achievement of communication and computation skills of students exiting their sophomore year. The scoring scale is revised periodically, and all students should refer to the University Catalog for the most current numbers. |
