...... . Description

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) School of Architecture (SOA) is pleased to offer an introduction to architecture program for high school students. "CoFA 2001: Connecting to Florida Architecture" is from July 8-July 28. During the three-week residential workshop, high school students are introduced to sketching, model building, digital media, problem-solving skills, freehand drawing techniques and working as a team. Field trips to historic sites in north and central Florida provide an appreciation of architectural treasures and Florida's history.  The three-week camp provides an extended and multi-dimensional introduction to the discipline. The mix of high school scholars with incoming freshmen creates a unique and academically challenging experience. The increased benefits for 2001 SOA freshmen are an opportunity to complete a SOA required course and an opportunity to pre-register for fall classes.  Incoming FAMU Arcitecture freshmen are eligible to receive three hours of college credit for a course. The SOA faculty often provide lectures, tours and demonstrations. Junior and senior architecture students serve as Teaching Assistants and Dormitory Resident Assistants.

The Institute for International Environmental Studies and Architecture (IIESA) is a component of the School of Architecture with activities that develop and link international/studies abroad component to the curriculum. Summer Camp students will be exposed to architectural contexts of the Caribbean. Illustrated lectures and an assigned exercise will emphasize explorations in how these international environments connect to Florida's building styles.

  . Eligibility

The program has competitive enrollment for under-represented but exceptional students. Opportunities are available for students entering 10th-12th grades, and for incoming freshmen architecture majors.  The program targets a diverse mix of students.

  . Cost

The CoFA 2001 summer program is funded by the Florida A&M University Title III Programs Office and the FAMU School of Architecture. Because of the use of diverse funding sources, the cost varies with the student's residency and academic level.
