Arleen Pabón-Charneco, Ph.D., JD Dr. Pabón teaches History of Architecture, Historic Preservation, and Architectural Theory and Philosophy. Prior to joining FAMU, she taught at the University of Puerto Rico where she served as Associate Dean. Dr. Pabón runs a consultancy in the fields of historic preservation, historical research, and cultural interpretation. A native of San Juan, she studied architecture at the University of Puerto Rico before earning her Ph.D. at Northwestern University. In addition to her academic and consulting work, Dr. Pabón has engaged in public service, notably as Advisor to Governor Pedro Rosselló of Puerto Rico, and as State Historic Preservation Officer. Dr. Pabón is a trustee of the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico and was President of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. She is Advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and has served on the Puerto Rico Architects and the Landscape Architects Examining Board. Dr. Pabón's books include: Una promesa inconclusa: Apuntes socio-arquitectónicos sobre el Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción el Grande (1999); Guánica: El origen de su memoria (1997, co-authored); Arquitectura, Historia y Patrimonio (1994, co- authored); and "Els colaboradors d'en Gaudí," published in Gaudí i el seu temps (1990), in addition to numerous academic articles. She has received several professional distinctions, including the National Park Service Historic Preservation Award (1995), the Special Year Dissertation Fellowship (Northwestern University, 1978-1979 and 1977-1978), the AIA Medal to the Highest Graduating Average (1974), and lifetime appointment as Corresponding Academician of the Sant Jordi Royal Academy of Arts in Barcelona. Dr. Pabón is a licensed attorney in Puerto Rico. In her spare time, she travels, reads, and writes, most recently delving into historical fiction. She has one son, Frederic Jorge. |
